Poland's state-run energy firm Orlen said on Friday it had signed a contract with Ukrainian gas company Naftogaz to supply 300 million cubic metres of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the first quarter of next year.

Orlen said the agreement follows a deal reached between the two firms during the Transatlantic Partnership for Energy and Climate Summit in Athens earlier this month.

'Our cooperation strengthens regional energy security'

"Only a few days passed between signing the letter of intent and finalising the contract," said Robert Soszyński, Orlen’s vice president for operations."

"We refined all details and secured the necessary approvals," he added in a statement. "This swift process would not have been possible without mutual trust and a clear understanding of each party's needs. Our cooperation strengthens regional energy security and creates conditions for further business development."

Naftogaz CEO Sergii Koretskyi said Ukraine was continuing to diversify its supply sources and routes to bolster its energy resilience.

"This year, as part of our cooperation with Orlen, 600 million cubic metres of American LNG will be delivered to Ukraine,” Koretskyi said.

"Overall, in 2026 we expect US LNG imports to reach 1 billion cubic metres," he added.

Orlen said it has already sold 600 million cubic metres of LNG to Ukraine, and that the new contract "further strengthens the partnership" and could pave the way for future agreements.

Ukrainian officials said last weekend that the country would also import LNG from Greece to cover winter energy needs, an announcement made during President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Athens.

The European Union last month approved a ban on Russian LNG imports starting in 2027 in response to Moscow's war in Ukraine.
